How to Choose the Perfect Engagement Ring

Some clients come to us knowing exactly the style of engagement ring their partner is looking for... Some couples come to us to design their ring together… But generally speaking – most people planning to propose are starting at square one.

Many think the design process will be overwhelming or intimidating, but when you’re working alongside Alexis (our lead designer), you’re never alone! One of our most important roles is guiding each client to make the best design decisions. Our goal is to create a fun, memorable and meaningful experience.

The first questions we ask when we start working with any client is about their partner. Their style, job, interests and current jewelry-wearing habits. All of these elements factor into the design of their ring.

Here are our top 3 tips to design an engagement ring your partner will love: 

1. Do your research

Speak to your partner about it ahead of time! They’ll likely have given it some thought. At the very least, find out their preferred diamond shape and get their finger sized at a local jeweler. 

If you’re set on keeping the proposal a complete surprise – be a good detective. Take a peek at your partner’s saved Instagram images, pop onto their Pinterest boards (often these ones are kept secret) and speak to their most trusted confidants - best friend, cousin or sister.

2. Make it personal

The decision to create a custom engagement ring makes this token of your relationship so much more meaningful than buying off the shelf. Selecting a one-of-a-kind diamond that represents your partner makes all the difference. Every client we work with is so proud of the ring they’ve created for their partner!

3. Keep it simple

When in doubt – keep it simple. Every small design detail really impacts the overall look of an engagement ring. Adding additional components doesn’t necessarily make the ring more special. Usually less is more, especially when you’re working with a unique rose cut diamond or sapphire – let the stone speak for itself.  

The most important thing to remember when you’re getting started is that you’ve likely never done this before – so it’s ok to feel overwhelmed. Work with a jeweler with whom you’re comfortable asking questions and seeking guidance.

There are a number of ways to include your partner in the design process, while ensuring that there’s still an element of surprise.
